ADS-B
(Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) is an acronym
used to
describe a new modular
tracking technology that will eventually replace traditional radar and
analog (voice) communications with
satellite tracking and high-speed digital communications. The
technology
commonly referred to as ADS-B is patented in 16 countries.
Named
SCAN
(Surveillance, Communication and Navigation) by its original inventor,
ADS-B based technologies may be used to locate, track
and communicate with vehicles or
personnel in land, air, marine and space environments.
In the aviation
industry, the patented technology SCAN
and ADS-B are virtually
identical. ADS-B/SCAN patent
protection encompasses communications involving the broadcast of target
identification and position information. The FAA describes
ADS-B as the enabling technology for free flight, a new safer method
for managing air traffic and preventing collisions. The long
awaited all-digital ADS-B system promises to greatly simplify all
pilot-controller tasks including emergency location and rescue
service. The commercial airline industry and the FAA estimate
that full deployment of ADS-B will reduce aviation related fatalities
by 80% and save $3.5 billion annually in fuel costs and improved
scheduling.
